Some thoughts & news!

It's been a while since I wrote the last entry in my blog. Why? There was a hard time I went through. I don't know if it is over, but everything is better, brighter, full of energy - and amazing. I gain a lot of energy from my relationship and from my work in AIESEC. Studies are going on, but I see the finish line right in front of me :-) I reflect back on my stay in the Philippines and I dream about what comes next. Let's see - life offers so many possibilities, and the next surprise is just around the corner.

Long time no see

It's been a while since my last post about Ha Noi and Bangkok - since I am back in Germany time flies by so fast! I travelled to three different AIESEC conferences and met a lot of friends, I try to keep up with university and find the time to get my feet back on the ground here in Germany. Not so easy.

Now I am looking forward to Christmas!

Some thoughts - and remembering Ha Noi & BKK!

It's exactly four weeks now - four weeks ago I came back to Germany after my great six-months-internship experience in the Philippines. It is great to be in touch with the people I met there and the first month back in Germany was exciting, sometimes really funny, and sometimes really tough and irritating. Somehow it gets better and better with this reverse culture shock, but still it is like loosing the ground beneath my feet.

I realized there is a post missing - about my trip to Ha Noi and the two days I spend in Bangkok before I went back to Germany. I really enjoyed the trip. I travelled on my own, and I had the chance to sort some thoughts, read a lot and I met some cool people all along the way.

Ha Noi is in the north of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and with it's 5 million inhabitants it felt small and cozy for me after six months in Manila. I shared my hotel room with a mouse - the receptionist said that it means luck in Vietnam to have a mouse in the house. That sounds sweet, but I know he just said that to keep me as a guest... But one mouse can't freak me out :-)

I loved Ha Noi - all those old tube houses from the French, the greenery in the city, and all those motorscooters...It was dynamic, noisy and sometimes a bit dangerous with all the traffic and I felt perfect in the middle of the chaos :-) I ate great noodles in some small eateries (I did not dare to eat dog...) and the beer was nice as well :-)

I walked around Ha Noi for three days, including the Ho Chi Min Mausoleum and day trip to the Ha Long Bay (but I have to tell you, Palawan (an island of the Philippines) is much more unique, pristine, and beautiful!).

Sightseeing was interesting, but I also bought some books about Vietnamese history, especially about the Vietnam War (which is called American War there) and about the story of Kim Phuc, 'the girl in the picture' - in the age of nine, Kim was burned by a napalm attack and ran towards a group of photographers. Her clothes were burned and only one of the photographers was ready to shoot the picture that made him famous and the cruelty of the Vietnam War visible to the world.

It was an intense feeling to read the books and be in the country at the same time. I am glad I had the time to go to Ha Noi and the chance to read some books so I was able to understand a little little bit of the history of Vietnam - after six months in the Philippines I felt less like a tourist in South-East-Asia, but of course I was still recognized as a foreigner. So I felt more like a part of the continent in the inside, but being a stranger from the outside - and back in Germany, that turned around and I feel more like a stranger from the inside...

I hope I will have the chance to go back to Vietnam one day, as well as to the Philippines and that I will discover more of Asia soon!

Back in Germany

It took me a while to update my blog again - the last weeks, my first weeks back in Germany were pretty busy. I subscribed for some courses (mostly financial stuff :-)) at university and started with a short thesis, and I tried to catch up with all university-related appointments and dates. I don't think I made it ;-)

And I am back in my AIESEC local committee (the lovely LC Augsburg!), facilitating a conference, preparing another conference (I am chair of BaAHAMS!!), meeting my friends...It is really nice to be back, but it feels strange at the same time.

I really go through a reverse-culture shock right now, which is harder than I expected. German mentality (punctuality, pessimistic worldview, being very demanding and self-centered) irritates me, and most of the time I feel a bit lost in the every-day life which is 'my' life again. Let's see. I want to think about my future plans and next steps in and after university-life, but I feel like I can't concentrate on those issues right now. My marriage gives me strength, which is great - and it is really funny how David brought back some Japanese mentality, and I brought back a little Filipina inside of me, and that is sometimes like a third culture shock, but a really cute one ;-)

I enjoy the last sunny days before fall pushes through in Augsburg and I am looking forward to some more powerful days.

It is amazing how my experience in the Philippines changed me, and I miss the country, the people and the every day life a lot. Sounds strange, but I also miss the traffic, the noise, the pollution, I miss to ride a Jeepney every day to work, I miss Headway, my coworkers, my friends, the sun and of course the travelling on the weekends. It was a great time!

Die letzten Tage in Manila

Der aufmerksame Blogleser hat ja sicher schon gemerkt, dass meine Zeit hier zu Ende geht...Am Samstag war ne grosse Abschiedsparty im Buero fuer mich, und alle Gaeste haben schwarz getragen, extra fuer mich, und wir hatten eine richtige Rockstar-Party :-) Soooo cool!! Sonntag war dann ganz gemuetlich mit Malling (sooooo filipino!!) und Sonnenuntergang am Bay. Jetzt wird gepackt, letzte Aufgaben bei der Arbeit erledigt, und am Donnerstag gehts nach Bangkok und am Freitag nach Hanoi. Und in 1,5 Wochen wieder nach Deutschland.

Letzte Reise in den Philippinen - Davao 27.-29.9.08

Letztes Wochenende bin ich das letzte Mal hier in den Philippinen unterwegs gewesen - zumindest im Rahmen meines Praktikums :-) Ich war in Davao, der Hauptstadt der Insel Mindanao, ganz im Sueden der Philippinen. Das ist genau die Insel, die in den letzten Wochen wegen islamistischen Rebellengruppen in den Nachrichten war. Davao ist aber sicher, und ich habe keine Unruhen mitbekommen.

Ich war allein unterwegs und hab die Zeit sehr genossen. Davao ist laut und ein bisschen dreckig, aber sehr sicher und auch sehr christlich gepraegt. Hier lebt nur eine kleine muslimische Minderheit.

Am Samstag gab's ein spontan Tattoo in Calinan, einer kleinen Stadt vor Davao. Ich war dort im Philippine's Eagle Conversation Center, dem groessten Adler der Welt. Und auf dem Rueckweg..ein Tattoo-Shop! Ich konnte nicht wiederstehen :-)



Ueber meinem ersten Tattoo von den Philippinen ist jetzt ein Schmetterling.



Denkmal fuer die Einheit von Christentum und Islam in Davao - ein guter Ansatz, finde ich!



Begeisterte Kinder in den Slums von Davao. Es war eine sehr intensive Erfahrung, in den aermlichen Gegenden unterwegs zu sein. Alle haben sich sehr gefreut und eine Familie hat mich zu Crackern und Wasser eingeladen - das war offensichtlich alles, was sie hatten.

Und...ein Kaefer! Hier gibt es ganz viele.

Ich habe meine letzte Reise sehr genossen. Jetzt bin ich schon am Sachen packen und good-bye-Party organisieren...es faellt mir schon schwer, mich von den Philippinen und den Menschen hier zu verabschieden. Auf das grosse Wiedersehen freue ich mich aber auch!

Jetzt habe ich noch genau fuenf Tage Arbeit uebrig, dann gehts nach Bangkok & Hanoi.

Negros - 20&21.8.2008

Der letzte Monat ist natuerlich auch ein Reisemonat: Letztes Wochenende war ich mit Sonia, Eva, Dorota und Lucie auf Negros, einer Insel in den Visayas, also im Herzen der Philippinen. Es war ein wunderschoenes Wochenende! Samstag Morgen ins Flugzeug (nach einiger Ueberredungskunst duerften wir sogar Lucie's Schweizer Messer mit ins Flugzeug nehmen...auf dem Rueckflug hats nicht mal jemand bemerkt...), dann direkt mit einem Auto zum Twin Lakes National Park, 20 km von der Hauptstadt Dumaguete entfernt.

Wir sind durch den Wald zum See gewandert, haben eine Bootstour gemacht - ganz ohne Touristen, Abgase, Verkehrslaerm. Einfach toll!!

Danach gings dann nach Dumaguete, eine relativ kleine (500.000 Einwohner) Universitaetsstadt. Dank den Englischkenntnissen der Filipinos sind wir gleich mit einer alten Dame ins Gespraech gekommen, die uns mehr ueber die Stadt und unser naechstes Reiseziel, Apo Island, erzaehlt hat. Ich finds immer super spannend, direkt mit den Leute zu reden und zu hoeren, was sie so ueber ihr Land denken. Gerade Politik ist immer interessant:

Die meisten Filipinos haben kaum Vertrauen in die Politik und in die Demokratie. Viele Politiker sind korrupt und mehr am eigenen Vorteil interessiert - ich habe hier schon zu schaetzen gelernt, dass unsere Demokratie in Deutschland funktioniert und die Politiker trotz aller Skandale und parteilichen Interessen relativ gut zusammen arbeiten. Klar gibt es auch bei uns viele suboptimale Zustaende, trotzdem funktioniert es weit besser als zum Beispiel hier in den Philippinen und in so vielen anderen Laendern der Welt.

Nach einem frische-Fruechte-Picknick in Dumaguete sind wir dann mit einer Banca (oder eher einer Nussschale) nach Apo Island gefahren.



Dank vulkanischem Ursprung sind die Straende auf Negros tatsaechlich schwarz! Sehr true :-)



Die Ueberfahrt war dank den hohen Wellen recht spannend. Auf Apo Island war dann Relaxen am Strand angesagt, total paradiesisch. Und fuer mich Tauchen am Sonntag, einer der tollsten Tauchgaenge, die ich hier ueberhaupt hatte. Die Unterwasserwelt ist so vielfaeltig und faszinierend, das alles andere doch recht unwichtig erscheint. Ich versuche jetzt, dieses wunderbare relaxte Gefuehl die Woche ueber zu retten :-)









Das Wetter war nicht 100 % optimal, es war sehr stuermisch, und da gabs dann am naechsten Morgen auch noch keine Elektrizitaet fuer Shakes. Das Inselleben ist schon sehr einmalig, auf Apo Island leben rund 700 Menschen, 300 davon Kinder. Die Menschen waren sehr freundlich und aufgeschlossen. Die Rueckfahrt nach Dumaguete war dann auch sehr spannend: Sturm, hohe Wellen, Regen - und das alles in der Nussschale...Und vom Strand dann mit dem Jeepney in die Stadt, natuerlich auf dem Dach, damit waren wir die Attraktion von allen (!!) Menschen am Strassenrand.




Am Abend gabs dann noch ein schoenes Abendessen auf der Stadt-Fiesta und ne Runde Drinks in einer Bar. Und am Morgen dann zum Flughafen und direkt in die Arbeit. Und seit dem bewahre ich das wunderbare relaxte Feeling vom Wochenende, allem anderen Stress zum Trotz. Sollte ich viel oefter versuchen, ist wirklich cool :-) Ich bin mit meinen Gedanken schon immer mehr zu Hause, und ich freue mich auch schon auf viele Leute und ein paar andere schoene Sachen daheim, trotzdem kommt auch ganz schoen viel Abschiedsschmerz auf. Naechstes Wochenende gehts dann nach Davao, die groesste Stadt auf der Insel Mindanao im Sueden der Philippinen. Falls jemand von euch die Nachrichten hier verfolgt: Die muslimischen Extremistengruppen sind zwar auf Mindanao, aber weit weg von Davao. Die Stadt wird nach wie vor als sicher eingestuft, also kein Problem. Ich freu mich schon auf persoenliche Berichte in ein paar Wochen..
